Hawkins and Milkins as much as the second stage
Barry Hawkins and Robert Milkins will join Judd Trump and Ryan Day to play snooker in Group A of Stage Two of the BetVictor Championship League after winning their respective groups at Stadium MK on Monday.
Hawkins' progress was confirmed after his first two games in the fourth group thanks to wins over Ben Hancorn (3-0) and Jackson Page (3-1). He faced Sam Craigie most recently but lost 3-1, which meant that Newcastle Potter ended up undefeated in second place after five draws against Hancorn and Page.
Hancorn made his professional debut, but finished bottom despite two draws, while Page was third due to a better frame difference.
Hawkins said, “You never know what to expect with the short format, but I got off to a good start and won my first two games. I can look forward to going back to the next stage.
"It's good to be leading the group. It's the first tournament of the season so nice to have a good start. It would have been nice to win all the games in the group, but Sam Craigie played fantastic snooker in the last game, so i have no complaints.
“It's an incredible job getting the calendar in order. So many people are losing their jobs and we're lucky enough to have some play opportunities and a busy calendar by Christmas. "
In Table 2, Milkins opened Group 3 with a 3-0 win over Chen Zifan before Gary Wilson scored the same goal against Jamie Jones. Wilson and Chen then drew 2-2 before Jones defeated Milkins 3-0. That meant Wilson could take over the group if he could beat Milkins, but the Gloucestershire man scored his second 3-0 win of the day to take control and knock Wilson out of the competition.
Milkins then waited for Chen's result against Jones. If Jones could win without taking a frame, the Welshman would advance, but any other result would be good news for Milkins. Chen's 76 break in the opening frame against Jones meant Milkins had reached the next leg.
From a frame down, Jones turned things around on Chen to win 3-1 and win £ 2,000 for second place. Wilson earned £ 1,000 for third place while Chen finished fourth on a single point.
