2020 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Yr Awards: Showcase 2

44

Towards the end of the year we were thrilled to see so many meaningful, reflective, and powerful stories in the posts on the Mark Gunter Photographers of 2020.

The theme this year is hope – and it's about both the story behind the picture and the picture itself. We ask that you read the captions and understand the meaning of the picture to any photographer.

Every entry makes a difference – and if you choose to pay, Tour de Cure will use your entry fee for cancer research.

Participants in the professional category compete for the prestigious title of Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year, the eternal trophy and a medallion.

In the amateur category, Wahoo generously awards prizes for the top three. First prize in this category goes to a Wahoo Elemnt Roam GPS computer. Second prize wins a Wahoo Elemnt Rival. and the third prize wins a Wahoo Tickr. All three winners also receive an annual subscription to the Sufferfest.

The competition ends on January 5th, 2021, at which point our judges – Kristof Ramon, Tim Bardsley-Smith and Ashley & Jered Gruber – will consider who will receive the award. While you're out on vacation this is the perfect time to get creative.

This week's storefront is a display of this year's images – and we hope you enjoy them.

The feature image comes from Anthony Leutenegger @anthonyleutenegger in the amateur category and is titled: “Hope! What better story for hope this year than Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado who won the cyclocross world championship. The first colored cyclist in history to do this. In this picture, she had just won the sprint and was screaming as her bike crashed into the gate that separated the fans and photographers from the riders. She hugged her mother as they both cried tears of joy. A very special moment. "

Per category

The professional category is open to all photographers who make a living from their work.

"Daniel Felipe Martinez from EF Pro Cycling in action during the time trial from Lure to La Planche des Belles Filles on the 20th stage of the Tour de France." Alex Whitehead @alex_swpix

“I took this shot on the last ascent of Paracombe on this year's Tour Down Under. The climb itself is pretty boring to look at, so I took a curb and crossed my fingers that something was going to happen in front of me. Sure enough, Richie Porte launched his attack a few feet in front of me and swung across the street to see if anyone could follow. They could not. "Zac Williams @z_w_photography

“One of the most iconic images of 2020 was the helicopter footage of the UCI Road Racing World Championships in Imola, Italy, of drivers racing over a ridge line after seeing the footage on television that I had to shoot there. Since there was only the men's race left, I had to find this place. Julian Allaphilippe, who shoots from the adjacent field and lifts the riders against the sky, demonstrates his descending skills in the super tuck position. “Chris Auld @cauldphoto

"The peloton passes the Madrid City Hall during the last stage of the 6th Ceratizit Challenge of La Vuelta 2020, a 100.5 km stage from Madrid to Madrid on November 8, 2020 in Madrid, Spain." Justin Setterfield @justinsetters

"At the beginning of 2020 wild bushfires hit the beautiful region in which I live. I had to evacuate twice in January and then, in the first week of February, I was able to follow the Sun Tour 2020 photo of the leading group in the King Valley where the sun is filtered in the smoky haze. “Jean-Pierre Ronco @imagewriterphotography

“I met Jean Eric Habimana at the Race Around Rwanda. He did the last leg of an amateur bikepacking race with us because he was concentrating on the real business, the Tour of Rwanda, where he started for the first time. Covid hit and prevented him from taking this opportunity to race in Europe this year. This is not a photo of a cycling race, but it is a photo of the hope that cycling can give to a young person and that is a country. Cycling needs more Jean Erics. “Tomás Montes @arrieredupeloton

“This picture is the culmination of three years. A three year plan for the Jersey. A rider. A plan. A Portland, Oregon bike shop and two mechanics took the Stars and Stripes cyclocross. This is the moment when the team manager / mechanic and driver drop into each other's arms to celebrate winning the US National Cyclocross Championship – while the team owner sits in the bokeh as only he has it. It is a technically imperfect picture. But it is and remains a capture that is close to my heart. “Drew Colman @dcmediahaus

"You will have a hard time finding the solitude you can find on a mountain road in the middle of a blizzard." Natalie Starr @natalierstarr

"Froomie. The definition of le Tour for the past 10 years. He dominated it. 2020 will be the end of his beautiful story with Team Sky / Ineos. Good luck, golden boy. “Paolo Martelli @paolopennimartelli

"With such limited races this insane year, Colby Lange of Team Generation Wildlife takes a tremendous win in SRM P-1-2, the Colorado State Patrol Criterium in Golden, Colorado." Ryan Muncy @ryanmuncy

Amateur category

“Jr CX… this photo shows my son's commitment to the sport. This photo sums up his passion for CX. “Ryan Crabbie @ arcrabbe75

“Friendship, true friendship that helped me survive this crazy year. Thank you very much. "Pedro Carvalho @pedrotheguide

“One of the last races before the lockdown! The pro women field at the Tour de Murrieta goes into the last round of the criterion. Pain in their faces and a bit of relief knowing the race will soon be over. “James Eby @easyeby

“This photo is more about the feeling that cycling brings than the actual cyclist in the photo. I think cycling brings us a sense of excitement and joy, even when we're not the biggest fans and we can't help but cheer them on. And just like we had to be this year, cyclists are way tougher than they look. “Hugo Pereira @ hugopereira.photo

“The national championship. The only race and jersey every UK cross rider wants to win… For Tom Pidcock this was the start of an amazing 2020 racing season. ”James Hards @jameshguitar

“Training at home because of COVID was a difficult time for me. Trying to find motivation and drive to practice was a really learned task. In the end, using a smart trainer was a great way to maintain the weight and even gain muscle. “Jacek Thomann

“Guillaume Van Keirsbulck is waiting for the start of the 5th stage of the 2020 Tour Down Under. This picture was shot through the glass of his CCC team bus and provides a window at a time when many fans were on the side of the road to take a look at the drivers before the race started. “George Turnbull @georgeturnbullphoto

“Cyclocross is a sport with high and low lows. I followed this guy as he continued to build his lead from lap to lap, but with one lap to go he blew his tire. Definitely not his day. "Chris Ward @ chrisward.photography

“In a year in which the preparation was not the best due to the Covid-19 (the Ordiziako Klasikoa, this year was the last preparation before La Vuelta), the drivers had to face a tough track that rain and cold would lead to to be added. The faces of the drivers when they arrived at the finish perfectly reflected this harshness and also the agony they had accumulated over the course of the year. “Markel Bazanbide @ markel.bazan

“Just an ordinary autumn trip in the Kopacki rit national park in the Croatian district of Baranya. We drove home and sunset was approaching but we didn't bring any lights so we have to be very quick. Despite the time reduction, I didn't want to miss this opportunity to get this shot. "Igor Dacic @codar

"I'm sure there is not a good year to lose the ability to ride a bike, but 2020 is not the year I would have chosen. While others have said that it was all about getting away by bike." my world is getting smaller and smaller. Getting a handwheel gave me back the parts I needed most, the ability to push myself through hard workouts and the feeling of still being part of the cycling community. "Amy Moody @ amy.thurbs

“A silver lining for the otherwise bleak 2020 racing season in Colorado was that the highest paved road in North America – to the summit of Mount Evans (4,350 m) – was closed to cars, which made it perfect for cyclists trying to reach a milestone to reach. This picture was taken on Father's Day, June 21st, when me and my two adult children were trying to get up on a bike, despite a few inches of snow left from a storm a few days earlier. "Reid Neureiter @reidnewphoto

“I decided to take a new route home with an abandoned railroad that had been torn up and ran over this bridge. I took this photo on the way home from work. It took me a lot longer to get home. But it's always worth finding such little gems. “Henry Kennedy @henrythe_human

“I moved to a new city in April of this year. Since I didn't know any other cyclists there, I explored the streets myself. I started carrying a small tripod to take pictures of myself while driving. I like the idea of including people in a landscape. I think it adds a certain amount of scalability. As I rolled through the tunnel and saw the light hit the mountains on the other side of the fjord, I stopped to set up the camera. “Benjamin Werner @benjaminoutriding
