Blow for Chelsea as high scorer Abraham injured in opposition to Newcastle
Tammy Abraham has missed a chance to impress new coach Thomas Tuchel after leaving the field injured in Chelsea's clash with Newcastle.
The English striker got a start after Tuchel was impressed with his performance against Barnsley in the FA Cup but his evening only lasted 20 minutes.
Following an ankle problem, Abraham – Chelsea's top scorer that season, scoring 12 goals – was treated on the field but was unable to continue and was replaced by Olivier Giroud.
What happened to Abraham at Stamford Bridge?
Abraham pursued a through pass but the retreating Jamaal Lascelles returned for an excellent tackle.
At the challenge, Lascelles got the ball, but caught Abraham with his follow-through.
After Abraham fell awkwardly on the route, he immediately clutched his ankle, looking in pain.
He stayed down for some time before receiving treatment and eventually hobbled off to be replaced by Giroud.
The severity of the injury is not yet known.
The striker kept his place in the starting XI after scoring the winning goal against Barnsley last week.
Aside from the goals in the Cup – he scored a hat trick against Luton – his closet has been empty since scoring three goals at Christmas.
His absence will give Giroud a chance but he is not a long-term option for Tuchel.
The list of busy Chelsea games
In a season shortened due to the late start, Chelsea have a number of games on the horizon.
The Blues are well into week two of Champions League action so you'll face two Legets at Atletico Madrid on February 23rd and March 17th. They also have Premier League games with Southampton and Manchester United before February ends.
