The UFC is back in front of a full capacity crowd in Houston, Texas for UFC 262, where the vacant lightweight is up for grabs. Who will win UFC gold?

The odds between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira were the same all week which is a surprise as I thought there would be action against anyone who was the underdog as this is a very close and competitive fight.

I'm surprised Chandler is the underdog as he will be the one who can set the pace. While he may not be known to the casual viewer having spent years at Bellator, he was one of the UFC's top lightweights and proved it in January when he scored a first-round TKO against Dan Hooker.

Oliveira is someone who has stopped fighting in the past which is very important to me. Despite being on an eight-fight winning streak, the level of competition has not been the best except for his last two fights. In this fight against Chandler, however, it's a tough stylistic matchup for him.

In combat, Chandler is the better striker and the better wrestler, while Oliveira is undoubtedly the better pure grappler. He doesn't have the best takedowns, however, and Chandler should be able to stuff them and hold them where he can succeed.

Although Chandler is smaller, he overcomes this in most of his fights. The last time he was against Dan Hooker, he used his pressure and kicks to find range, then threatened a takedown that brought his hands down and landed the big shot. If Chandler is the one to dictate and maintain the pace, in my opinion it will only be a matter of time before he finds the knockout shot and becomes the new UFC lightweight champion.

Selection: Michael Chandler (+110)

Will Ferguson snap up his lost skid?

Tony Ferguson had a terrible 2020 when he was scheduled to fight for the belt against Chabib Nurmagomedov in April. Unfortunately due to the pandemic that changed and he took on Justin Gaethje for the subtitle in May, he suffered a brutal TKO blow in the fifth and was then dominated by Oliveira in December. Beneil Dariush, meanwhile, has the chance to become an elite lightweight on Saturday night.

Ferguson & Dariush Final Fights

Charles Oliveira, loss by decision Fight 1 Diego Ferreira, victory by separate decision
Justin Gaethje, loss to TKO (preliminary title fight) Fight 2 Scott Holtzman, KO victory
Donald Cerrone, TKO victory Fight 3 Drakkar Klose, KO victory
Anthony Pettis, win from TKO Fight 4 Frank Camacho, win by submission

This fight will really tell whether Tony Ferguson's last two defeats were just two of the best, or if he really isn't the elite fighter he was anymore.

Both Ferguson and Dariush are very good grapplers, with Dariush likely having a performance advantage, but Ferguson has a unique punch and could very well just volume Dariush out.

Ultimately, I think Dariush can get involved in the argument and hitting and win a decision. Ferguson is super durable and I'm not sure if Dariush will make it to the UFC 262 goal, but to me this fight could look a lot like Ferguson-Oliveira in December.

Selection: Beneil Dariush (-165)

Other UFC 262 picks:

  1. Matt Schnell (-159): Quickly should be able to cut up Bontorin on the feet and cram the takedowns and either win a decision or stop late as Bontorin usually gasses.
  2. Katlyn Chookagian (-139): Chookagian will likely be able to cram the takedowns and just the volume of Aruajo for a decisive win.
  3. Edson Barboza (+114): Burgos is getting too hit for my liking and Barboza may just have to land one. This fight could come down to who lands first but I think Barboza is the better striker and will find the knockout shot.
