English batsman Zak Crawley fought for half a century to put Kent in the lead against Sussex.

Crawley (61, not eliminated) made his third fiftieth of the season to help Kent close a 111 deficit when they finished 138-2 in their second inning.

Kent led at 27 with eight-second innings wickets in hand.

Previously, Sussex was knocked out for 256 in response to Kent's 145 as Essex borrower Matt Quinn (4-54) and Nathan Gilchrist (3-51) were the bowlers' choice.

Stiaan van Zyl (52) scored the first goal, while Tom Clark (42) also impressed in a partnership with a value of 61 on the fifth wicket.

But Kent's bowlers kept pocketing themselves under helpful conditions, and Darren Stevens also claimed 3-64 when Sussex was fired just before tea.

Kent's second inning got off to a scratchy start when Jofra Archer backed his first innings numbers of 2:29 with the wicket of opener Jordan Cox (12) with an inswinging delivery that had previously caught him on the leg.

Ollie Robinson also caught captain Daniel Bell-Drummond on Clark's third slip to bring Kent down to 59-2.

Crawley was then joined by Jack Leaning, 18, not knocked out, the top scorer of the first innings, and the pair made it unharmed with an unbroken partnership of 79 on the third wicket as Kent made their way into the lead.
