Richard Carapaz wins Tour de Suisse stage 5
Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) won the mountainous fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse in a two-man sprint against Jakob Fuglsang (Astana-Premier Tech). Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) came third out of a group of favorites who finished 39 seconds behind the two leaders.
With his stage win, Carapz also took off the leader's jersey from stage 4 winner Mathieu van der Poel.
Van der Poel tried his hand at the breakaway group at the beginning of the stage, but was dropped when the road went uphill towards Leukerbad.
Fuglsang was one of the favorites in the overall standings for the last 20 kilometers of the stage. He attacked and spent 15 km ahead of him but was eventually supported by Carapaz 3 km from the finish line. The two rode to the finish line with a group of heavy hitters. Woods and Lucas Hamilton (Team BikeExchange) attacked the last climb, but in the end crossed the finish line with four other GC hunters.
