Matt Critchley: Essex indicators Derbyshire rounders for an undisclosed payment
Matt Critchley scored 4,711 runs and took 198 wickets for Derbyshire after making his debut in 2015
Essex signed Derbyshire all-rounder Matt Critchley to a three-year deal after activating a release clause in his contract.
The 25-year-old turned down a new deal at Derbyshire – which reportedly exceeded the offer from Essex, who paid an undisclosed fee for him.
Critchley scored exactly 1,000 runs in the County Championship that year and took 32 wickets on his leg spin.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be here and to have signed with Essex," he said.
"Essex have been one of the best teams in the country for the past six years, you just have to look at the players in the dressing room and the trophies they have won to know this has to be a great place to play cricket .
"It was a tough decision to leave Derbyshire but when the interest caught me I wanted to make the move and can't wait to get started and put on the Essex shirt."
Critchley had a year left on his Derbyshire contract but wanted to move to Division One for Essex, who won the County Championship and T20 Blast in 2019 and the Bob Willis Trophy last year.
"There have been a multitude of clubs chasing Matt's signature so it is a real coup for us that he has fitted into our vision and believes that Chelmsford is where he develops as a cricketer and Title can win, "said John Stephenson, CEO of Essex.
